Brit’s perspective about what to do with China

Thanksgiving is coming and that means we set the table properly! Bone china, Tiffany and co. flatware and Waterford crystal. The inherited linens starched, you get my drift- in the south especially we do it RIGHT and pull out the big guns. Displaying china, whether it's heirloom pieces or a collection you've curated, can add elegance and charm to your home. Here are some tips on how to display china effectively when it’s not on the table.

We are obsessed with this china pattern above so click HERE

CHOOSE A SUITABLE DISPLAY AREA

  • Cabinet: A glass-fronted china cabinet or hutch is ideal for displaying and protecting your china from dust. It’s literally why they were invented.

  • Open Shelves: Install open shelves in a dining room or kitchen where your china can be easily seen and accessed.

  • Wall-Mounted Racks: Use wall-mounted racks and plate hangers for displaying decorative plates or dishes. There are even terrific plate hangers for brick! Click HERE!

ORGANIZE BY THEME OR STYLE

  • Group Similar Items: Arrange your china by color, pattern, or style to create cohesive displays.

  • Mix and Match: Combine different sets or pieces for a more eclectic and personalized look.

We love a mix and match of different pieces and eras!

HIGHLIGHT SPECIAL PIECES

  • Feature Pieces: Place special or standout pieces in prominent positions, such as the center of a shelf or at eye level.

  • Rotate Displays: Change out pieces seasonally or for special occasions to keep your display fresh and interesting especially

USE DISPLAY ACCESSORIES

  • Plate Stands: Use plate stands to prop up decorative plates or bowls.

  • Display Easels: Easels can showcase larger pieces like platters or serving dishes.

ENHANCE WITH LIGHTING

  • Under-Cabinet Lighting: Install lighting inside or underneath cabinets to highlight your china collection.

  • Spotlights: Use spotlights or adjustable lamps to illuminate specific pieces or areas of your display.

This picture is very traditional but we love the mix of the wall pieces with the shelving in the lit bookcase. We especially like the secret door to the right of the cabinet- you can see the hinges if you look close!

ACCESSORIZE AROUND YOUR CHINA

  • Artwork: Hang artwork or decorative mirrors around your display area to complement your china.

  • Greenery: Place small potted plants or vases of fresh flowers nearby for a natural touch.

CREATE SYMMETRICAL BALANCE

  • Symmetrical Arrangements: Arrange items symmetrically for a balanced look, such as pairing matching sets or alternating heights.

  • Visual Balance: Ensure there is space between items to prevent overcrowding and allow each piece to stand out.

CONSIDER SAFETY AND MAINTENANCE

  • Sturdy Mounting: Securely mount shelves or cabinets to the wall to support the weight of your china.

  • Easy Access: Ensure your display is easy to access for cleaning and rearranging items as needed.

ROTATE & REFRESH

  • Seasonal Displays: Change your display seasonally to reflect different holidays or themes.

  • Special Occasions: Adjust your display for special occasions or gatherings to showcase different pieces.

PERSONALIZE YOUR DISPLAY

  • Add Personal Touches: Incorporate personal mementos or collectibles alongside your china to reflect your personality and interests.

  • Showcase Memories: Display items that hold sentimental value or have been passed down through generations.

By following these tips, you can create a visually appealing and personalized display for your china collection, enhancing the beauty of your home while showcasing cherished pieces for you and your guests to admire. Often china collects dust so make sure to use it to your advantage as decor and for dining!

XOXO-
