Creating the Ultimate Homework Station: Functional and Stylish
A dedicated homework station can make a world of difference for students of all ages. Whether you're a student yourself or creating a space for your child, here’s how you can design a homework station that is both functional and stylish:
LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION
- Choose a Quiet Spot: Select a quiet area in your home away from distractions like TV or high-traffic areas. This could be a corner of the living room, a nook in the bedroom, or a dedicated home office space.
ESSENTIAL FURNITURE
- Desk: Invest in a sturdy desk that provides enough surface area for spreading out books, notebooks, and a laptop or computer. Consider adjustable height desks for growing children.
- Chair: Opt for an ergonomic chair that provides good support and encourages good posture during study sessions. This one isn’t pretty but we use it in the studio and we swear by it! Click HERE
ORGANIZATIONAL TOOLS
- Shelves and Storage: Install shelves or use bookcases to keep textbooks, supplies, and reference materials neatly organized and within reach.
- Desk Organizer: Use a desk organizer or caddy to store pens, pencils, scissors, and other stationery items. This keeps essentials handy and minimizes clutter.
LIGHTING
- Task Lighting: Ensure there is adequate lighting, preferably with a desk lamp that provides focused light for reading and writing. Natural light is ideal during the day, so position the desk near a window if possible.
COMFORT AND PERSONALIZATION
- Comfortable Decor: Add cushions or a throw blanket to the chair for extra comfort during long study sessions.
- Personal Touches: Incorporate personal items like a favorite mug for pens, inspirational quotes, or artwork to make the space feel welcoming and motivating.
TECHNOLOGY
- Tech Integration: Include necessary technology such as a computer, printer, and charging stations for devices. Ensure there are outlets or power strips nearby for easy access to power.

STYLE AND AESTHETICS
- Color Scheme: Choose a color scheme that promotes concentration and relaxation, such as calming blues or greens. Avoid overly stimulating colors like bright reds or oranges.
- Decor Elements: Incorporate decorative elements such as plants, motivational posters, or a corkboard for pinning schedules, to-do lists, and achievements.
ORGANIZATION AND ROUTINE
- Establish a Routine: Encourage a consistent study routine by setting designated homework times and maintaining an organized workspace. Use calendars or planners to track assignments and deadlines.
At the end of the day our kids have homework. It’s a fact of life. My daughter is homeschooled so she’s doing homework in the studio, in her bedroom, at her homework station in the sunroom- I honestly don’t care as long as she’s focused on getting the work done. Our oldest son has ADHD and having one space for all his things was crucial so he only did homework at his office. The point of all this is to pick whatever works for your kids and your family- make adjustments as needed and keep moving forward!
